Cooper Commercial Completes $4+M Linear Accelerator Project for Austin Cancer Centers

When the art of saving lives intersects the art of building; herein lies the Cooper Commercial / Austin Cancer Centers team.  With over 50 years combined experience in their respective fields, each group is making its mark on Williamson County.

When Dr. George Brown, MD, a radiation oncology physician at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, came to Austin 40 years ago, he had a specific purpose in mind: help people by providing state-of-the-art cancer care.   That purpose evolved into what is now Austin Cancer Centers, independent cancer centers dedicated to providing patients the highest standard of care with heartfelt compassion and dedication.   In fact, Austin Cancer Centers is the only cancer treatment center between San Antonio and Dallas to be accredited by the American College of Radiology – the Gold Standard of accreditation for radiology and radiation oncology programs.

Building on Dr. Brown’s reputation for cancer care in Central Texas, Cooper Commercial, led by Georgetown resident Eric C. Cooper CCIM, is the Design-Build firm selected by Austin Cancer Centers for all of their real estate, development, and design-build needs.  Helping the medical community with its comprehensive service offerings of commercial real estate, development and design-build construction, Cooper Commercial also assists clients with renovations, expansions, technology and infrastructure upgrades and sustainability initiatives.

Serving the Central Texas communities of Austin, Kyle, Georgetown, Lakeway and Round Rock, Austin Cancer Centers brings patients cutting-edge technology and practice methods typically found only in major academic cancer centers.

Cooper Commercial led the project of installing a state-of-the-art Elekta Infinity linear accelerator in Austin Cancer Centers Georgetown location under the direction of Dr. Douglas Rivera, MD, radiation oncology physician and partner with Austin Cancer Centers. This advanced technology

works by first giving the patient a crisp, low-dose, three dimensional CAT scan to ensure the doctor “sees” the target to determine if a shift in position is necessary before powerful radiation is delivered to the tumor.  This technology is further enhanced with an Agility Multi Leaf Collimator, a hi-resolution delivery system with160 finger-like extensions which shape the radiation field to match the tumor size and shrink wrap the radiation dose to the tumor volume.

Continuing their partnership to improve cancer treatment for Central Texans, Cooper Commercial recently completed an expansion of the Medical Oncology Department at Austin Cancer Centers in Round Rock, led by Dr. Brian Shimkus, MD the Director of Medical Oncology, which is now open for infusions and labs.  The firm has also recently completed the expansion of Austin Cancer Centers at St. David’s North Austin Medical Center and is underway with a new linear accelerator project at Austin Cancer Centers in Lakeway. The Lakeway clinic will feature the Elekta Synergy linear accelerator and be under the direction of Dr. Steven Brown, MD, radiation oncology physician and managing partner with Austin Cancer Centers.

Cooper Commercial understands the business values and drivers of the medical community and works as a client advocate throughout development, design and construction.  Cooper’s goal is to guide clients seamlessly through the process, helping to maximize the efficiency of space, streamline budgets and schedule, and guide prudent financial decisions –  decisions which ultimately can contribute to the quality of client care.

When two pioneers in medicine and construction join forces, communities benefit.  Patients enjoy state-of-the-art technology and unsurpassed care in an environment of thoughtful, sustainable design and craftsmanship. We are fortunate in Williamson County to have such a team in Austin Cancer Centers and Cooper Commercial.
